Jesse Washington, Entertainment Editor, AP

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Recorded at the entertainment publicists professional society (EPPS) luncheon “Digital Entertainment Publicity.”

Jesse Washington discusses the AP’s expanding role covering entertainment news, truth versus rumor, and the paparazzi.

Some of Jesse’s VlogViews:

“The public’s appetite for entertainment news has changed and we have to satisfy that by applying AP standards to what is a wild and freewheeling type of universe.”

“People are very interested in images these days, it’s a very visual culture that we live in. So we have to augment the traditional word on a page or on a screen with something people can look at and engage with.”

“We’re not paparazzi and we never will be. Jon Bon Jovi shopping is not news for us. Jon Bon Jovi making music, releasing an album, getting into trouble is news and so we will cover that. But in general we are not going to be in that big pack of photographers standing around waiting for something to happen.”

Interview with Tom Becktold, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Business Wire

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Tom Becktold weighs in on what he thinks would be the big stories in PR in 2008, accountability in a changing business world, the keys to a successful press release and the importance multimedia content.

Some of Tom’s VlogViews:

“There has been a lot of debate within our industry on how to apply social media tools to our communications outreach efforts.”

“You want to send links back from your press release to call to actions within your website that you can then measure so you’re grabbing an analysis of what the audience is responding to.”

“Often times the hit count on a website for a press release that has video or photos or some other type of multimedia content is triple that of press releases with no multimedia content.”

Some of Doug’s 2008 Predictions

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

1.  Hillary and McCain will be nominated and Hillary will win.

2.  The Patriots will lose before Isiah Thomas will be fired as both Coach  and President of the Knicks.

3.  In PR and Communications, ”Social Media Video Releases” and “B to F Marketing” will become common  buzz words.

4.  Stations will increasingly disclose use of 3rd party video–in part because of the  amount of political content during the election year. Fines against Comcast by the FCC will not be collected.

5.  There will be  growing demand for PR pros who can place multimedia content online.

6.  I’ll spend part of the year in a sling recovering from surgery for my torn rotator cuff and Roger Clemens will not give me any of his leftover steroids or HGH.

7.  PRSA will honor Jack O’Dwyer with a lifetime achievement award.
