Douglas Simon, President and CEO of D S Simon Productions, spoke with Eliot Mizrachi, Director of Communications for the Entertainment Software Rating Board, about the upcoming Supreme Court case involving California law limiting access to violent video games as well as the role of communications in education campaigns. The interview took place at the PR News Digital PR Next Practices Summit.

Some of Eliot’s Vlog Views:

“A big part of what we do is educating parents and other consumers about the tools and information we provide so that they can make informed decisions about the games for their children.”

“We’ll team up with a group like Game Stop to do public education campaigns through their stores, in store signage. We’ll work with the New Orleans Saints or state officials to do state wide PSA campaigns that are on TV and radio. It’s really a question of finding the right partners and putting good tactics in the proper places that are going to educate the public about the ratings.”

“The issue is really a question of can a state impose a law that restricts access to constitutionally protected speech and that’s why the Supreme Court is looking at it. One of the issues that they’re going to have to weigh is, is there a less restrictive means that the state could use to achieve its purpose. So if we don’t want kids playing games that are inappropriate for them, how can we go about doing that? The rating system is really the answer.”

Doug’s Predictions for 2010

Monday, January 4th, 2010

To link to post: http://bit.ly/4H8zhE

The Economy:
The stock market will continue to rise. Unemployment will stabilize and will actually start dropping in advance of the election.

Politics:
Republicans will make gains in November but smaller than anticipated.

Our Industry:
Optimistic about new transparency and I don’t feel that there will be a flare up over the FTC Spokesperson Guidelines. PRSA will continue to be less relevant.

Random Thoughts:
Tiger Woods will return and won’t win a major. On the bright side, his “sex addiction” will be treated successfully.

Holiday Video Greeting and Donation From D S Simon Productions

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

For many in the business world, 2009 has been a year of survival. But survival takes on a far different meaning when you consider the millions of Americans who literally don’t have enough to eat. As part of our company holiday celebration, we decided to spend a day helping out at a food and clothing bank here in New York City and making a donation to help provide winter clothing to those in need.

Our time spent at the Hebrew Union College Soup Kitchen and Clothing Closet showed how thin the dividing line is between needing help and self sufficiency. This year we saw a larger percentage of “working poor” who still couldn’t earn enough after paying rent and utilities to pay for food at the end of the month. We saw a much larger percentage of people who you could easily imagine working in successful high paying jobs. It definitely helps us to realize how blessed we are.

We wanted to offer this Holiday Video Card as a thank you to all we have worked with in 2009 and take this opportunity to wish you all the best in the New Year.

About Hebrew Union College Soup Kitchen and Clothing Closet

Every Monday evening, in every season, the student-run HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen welcomes over 100 homeless and hungry guests for a nutritious meal. Volunteers from around the New York area – secondary school pupils, college students, and adults – help us prepare and serve the meals. The Soup Kitchen offers our guests not only meals but also free legal counseling by NYU Law School students, free clothing, and toiletries, as well as a sewing service.

The Future of Broadcast PR

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Broadcast PR needs to get beyond the hyper-competition and start communicating about the value we provide.

See the full article on Bulldog Reporter’s website here.

The acquisition of MediaLink for $1.4 million followed by the Chapter 7 filing by On the Scene Productions could lead many to mistakenly conclude that broadcast PR is in trouble.

Satellite Media Tours, Internet Media Tours and new web based services, including tools to help organize, store, share and control online video are providing more value than ever. The future of PR is “PRketing” and broadcast plays a vital role in developing a successful strategy.
