Doug Simon, President and CEO of D S Simon Productions, spoke with Olivier Fleurot, CEO of MS&L Group at the PRWeek Age of Opportunity conference held in New York City on November 9, 2010 about the growing importance of public relations in a social media savvy world and how MS&L, the flagship specialty communications, PR and events network for Publicis Groupe is rising to meet changing PR demand.

Some of Olivier’s VlogViews:

“If I am in PR today it’s because I see a very interesting possibility to transform this industry and make it even more relevant in the coming years.”

“If you look at the transformation that is happening at the moment between a world where we were pushing messages to a world where now people are creating their own content and choosing which community they want to share ideas with… I think there is a big opportunity (for PR) IF we know how to seize it.”

“I think we have to raise our game. We also have to demonstrate that we can be a lot more proactive because I think in the PR industry we’ve been a bit too passive … we need to show to our clients, existing or potential clients, that we can have very big ideas.”

Doug Simon of D S Simon Productions caught up with Stephanie Sisco, Editorial Assistant of Real Simple, at the Editor Showcase: Green Living to discuss Real Simple’s product comparison and road tests as vehicles to better inform their consumer base.

Some of Stephanie’s VlogViews:

“Basically what we do is just go out and find a category that we think our readers want to know what’s the best product out there or the best few products. We don’t just feature one product in our road test; we feature about seven or eight that are the best.”

“We’ve always had the idea that we shouldn’t separate green products and green living from your everyday living. We think that we should test all green products right next to those that may be chemical filled and really determine which one is the best. We love to showcase when the green products actually do better.”

Doug Simon of D S Simon Productions spoke with Jessica Tolliver, Senior Media Relations Manager at Carmichael Lynch Spong, who represented
www.westinghousesolar.com at the Editor Showcase: Green Living event on Westinghouse’s goal of making solar power accessible to the everyday consumer and how to better reach targeted audiences using the change in media climate.

Some of Jessica’s VlogViews:
“Westinghouse solar makes panels that are accessible to the homeowner… It takes a concept that I think used to seem pretty out there for people: expensive, complicated and a little hippie and a little hard to achieve and makes it a lot more mainstream.”

“Our clients (at Carmichael Lynch Spong) are starting to understand more and more the value of outlets that have possibly smaller audiences but audiences that are more on target, a higher percentage of them are actually going to stand the chance of going out there and spend money on their products”

“We certainly have many new outlets on our media list these days and people we reach out to. Probably five years ago we reached out to print and broadcast and radio and now we reach out to print, broadcast and online….The best practices that have always been the case remain true and it’s knowing the outlet.”

“Online certainly has different needs as far as video and images and quick turnaround times and responsiveness, so when we reach out to media we try to have those tools at our disposal to increase our odds of getting coverage.”

Peter Insalaco of Clean the World on Saving Children, One Bar of Soap at a Time

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Have you ever left soap in the shower after a hotel room stay? If you have, you might never have imagined you could actually be saving children’s lives. Sounds crazy? It will all make sense after you hear D S Simon Productions President & CEO Douglas Simon’s conversation with Peter Insalaco, Regional Director of Clean the World, at Editor Showcase: Green Living in New York City.

Some of Peter’s Vlog Views:
“The mission in Clean The World is to stem childhood mortality. That’s the ultimate mission. The way they’re going about it is collecting used soap and bottled amenities from hotels, sanitizing the soap, and then within 60 days of pickup, a child or a mother somewhere in the world has this hygiene product.”

On how online video has helped Clean the World grow…
“I was doing some research for a client of mine, came upon the site (cleantheworld.org) and there’s a video on there called “How it All Began” and it explains that there are nine thousand children under the age of five years old that die every day. Today. Tomorrow. The next day. Nine thousand children a day, because they don’t have hygiene products.”

“They are in over 400 hotels now. It is growing because people are starting to understand that on the sustainable side, it keeps it (soap) out of the waste stream and on the other side it’s a lifesaving initiative by it being sanitized and shipped.”
