Barbara Pierce, Eastman Kodak

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Barbara Pierce, PR director of worldwide brand marketing and communications for Eastman Kodak, discusses how her company used social media to respond to an error in the Wall Street Journal. Recorded at the IPREX Reputation Management Panel, hosted by Ken Makovsky, Founder and President of Makovsky and Co.

“We’re finding that online has been able to help us manage our reputation…Between the story running and hitting the paper on Feb. 5th to Feb 6th when it ran the correction, we had several twitters out via our own twitter feed which goes out to the industry. We had Antonio Perez himself flying back from the investor meeting get into our studios and tape a video for our customers that went up on Youtube and our Facebook page. We distributed the link all of our customers and all of our sales reps. We had industry analysts…they were doing blogs…directly refuting, calling out the Wall Street Journal [for its mistake.]”

Stephen Dishart, Managing Director, Communications & HR at Swiss Re, discusses the need to keep client and employees informed in this time of change. Recorded at the IPREX Reputation Management Panel, hosted by Ken Makovsky, Founder and President of Makovsky and Co.

“You do have to start internally because you’ve got to get the employees online and understanding what’s going on, so we’re explaining to them the regulatory issues and the exposure issues first so that they can communicate with their customers and also to rebuild their confidence in the firm.”

Gary Sheffer, General Manager, Public Affairs and Employee Communications at GE, discusses the need for a “communications reset.” Recorded at the IPREX Reputation Management Panel, hosted by Ken Makovsky, Founder and President of Makovsky and Co.

“What we’ve tried to do over the past year is really find ways to humanize GE, to make it more than just about our earnings and our balance sheet….We’re trying to reach retirees for the first time, personal communications with them. We’ve had about 500,000 retirees from the company. It’s an army of people that want to help build our reputation…In some ways, while it’s been a tough year, it’s also been liberating. For the communications function at GE ironically, our value has grown.”
