One of the things that troubles a lot of old-style media people is that they ARE being held accountable - consider the furor raised over the CBS/phony documents flap that drove Dan Rather from the air. And bloggers too are being held accountable - remember how Amanda Marcotte was forced out as a John Edwards blogger after some of her other writings were publicized? Accountability is - and should be - a two-way street. It does no good for mainstream organizations to sniff about fact-checking and their layers of editors when howlers get through. And bloggers who want to be taken seriously, particularly those who criticize established media, need to be very careful with their own facts. There are a lot of people doing fact-checking now, and the chances of an erroneous or just plain false report standing unchallenged seem to diminish daily.
